Baboso Tinto

This varietal wine is made 100% from Baboso Negro grapes. The maceration process takes place in small stainless steel containers for 15 days. Once the malolactic fermentation is over, the wine is clarified and filtered. It is –then- moved to oak barrels (which are made from either American oak or French oak) wherein the wine will stay for the next 6 months.

Tradicional Tinto

Made from a blend of different grape varieties: Listán Negro (90%), and a mixture of Baboso Negro, Vijariego Negro and Negramoll (10%), the wine is produced by the traditional 6-day maceration process at 25ºC (77ºF). Maroon-red color with good depth.

Pairs well with: red and white meat, cured cheese and bean stew.

Spicy aromas of licorice, pepper, fruits and minerals.
On the palate, it is well structured, with a good tannic support, soft, with a persistent and pleasant aftertaste.
It is clear, shiny and pale yellow in color. On the nose, it conveys fine aromas of anise and fruits. On the palate, it is structured, well balanced, persistent and fresh, with a harmonic finish. Its balanced acidity makes it pleasant to the taste.

Afrutado Selección

This wine is the result of a perfect blend of Vijariego Blanco, which contributes acidity and alcoholic strength; and Listán Blanco, which provides smoothness and aromas. It was made by cutting short the fermentation process through the chilling of the must, while there were still residual sugars in it.

This wine is the result of a perfect blend of Vijariego Blanco (60%), which contributes acidity and alcoholic strength; and Listán Blanco (40%), which provides smoothness and aromas.

Yellow-greenish in color, the wine carries aromas of ripe fruit. On the palate, it is fresh, fruity, well balanced and perfectly structured.

Our History

Despite the very scant data left after the fire of the Valverde town hall in 1878, it is generally agreed upon that the plantation of grape-bearing vines started around 1526; the year in which an Englishman, John Hill, planted the first vines.

In 1833, the administrator of the diocese of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) registered the production of 2,872 barrels of wine, equivalent to 1,292,400 liters. Half of it was intended for the production of distilled spirits or aguardiente.

This liquor was then exported to South America, mainly Cuba, where it was highly valued and in great demand. Currently, the whole harvesting of the grapes is destined to the production of wine, from which just a small part is for local consumption.

According to the census of 1982, there were 508 hectares (1,255 acres) of non-irrigated land dedicated to the production of grapes for wine making. These vineyards were located at altitudes between 200mts (650ft) and 700mts (2,290ft). By 1997 the census of “Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen El Hierro” (the entity charged with regulating the quality of winemaking on El Hierro Canary Island), indicated that there were 235 hectares (580 acres) exclusively intended for winemaking to cover the growing demand for bottled wine; most of these wines are characterized as young fruity and refreshing.

The region soils can be described as sandy, having some of them a clay mantle. In general, the land is ragged and rocky, with steep slopes, which has forced farmers to resort to building terraces with stone retaining walls. Therefore, harvesting is dificult, arduous and labor-intensive.

There are three clearly defined grape-growing areas:

  • The Gulf: This area faces the northwest. Its soils are sandy, lose
    and well drained. Given that this land is non-irrigated, its production is highly determined by the seasonal rain. In general, rain is scarce, and badly distributed; consequently, crops are unpredictable.
  • The Valley: Weather permitting, the wines from this region are of exceptional quality.
  • The Coast, the middle ground and the mountain: these are lands located within 125 meters (410ft) and 550 meters (1,800ft). The predominant grape varieties in this area are: Vijariego, Listán BLanco and Listán Negro.

However, it is this area, with its greater selection of varieties, that together make up what is called “The Canary Island’s Grape Variety Reserve” (Reserva Varietal de Canarias).
